What the card shows
A woman with long black hair sits on a carved stone throne at the edge of the sea. She wears flowing sea-green robes over indigo, and a crown of coral branches with a pearl, strings of beads falling beside her face. In both hands she holds a covered vermilion cup and looks into it quietly. Carp and a scallop shell are carved on the throne; pebbles lie at her feet, waves break on the rocks, and the dusk sky is pale pink over a far island.
In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Queen of Cups sits at the sea's edge holding an ornate closed cup, her throne carved with sea creatures. The closed cup is the inner life, kept private and respected. She is the suit of feeling at its most mature: compassionate, intuitive and steady.
