What the card shows
A bearded lord in a gold crown sits on a stone throne set on a flat rock in the middle of a rough sea. His indigo and sage-green robes are patterned with waves, edged in vermilion, and scallop shells are carved on the arms of the throne. He holds a red lacquer cup in his right hand and a short knobbed sceptre in his left, and his face is calm. Behind him a small sailing boat with two fishermen rides the swell, a carp leaps from the water, and a pale sun sets over a wooded shore.
In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the King of Cups sits on a throne floating on a restless sea, a ship and a leaping fish behind him. He is feeling mastered: deep emotion held with calm and wisdom. The leaping carp, in Japanese tradition a sign of perseverance, suits a king who stays steady against the current.
King of Cups in love
A mature, caring partner, emotionally steady and generous. Or the call to stay calm and kind in a stormy moment.
King of Cups in work
Calm leadership, diplomacy, counsel. Keep your head while others lose theirs, and lead with understanding.
As advice
Before you answer the difficult message or conversation, take three slow breaths and speak from calm rather than from the wave.
