What the card shows

A young attendant with hair tied up in a red ribbon stands on a sandy shore in a sage-green robe patterned with white lotus flowers, a vermilion sash at the waist. He holds up a red lacquer bowl in one hand, and from the water in it a small golden carp looks up at him. He looks down at it thoughtfully. Behind him waves roll in and break white over dark rocks, and a far island lies on the horizon.

In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Page of Cups shows a young man by the sea with a fish rising from his cup. It is read as a gentle surprise from the emotional or intuitive world: a message, a crush, an idea. The fish is the unexpected feeling that appears on its own; the lotus on his robe is a symbol of tenderness growing out of ordinary ground.
