What the card shows
A round, contented man sits squarely on a low wooden bench, arms crossed over his chest, eyes closed and face turned up in a satisfied smile. He wears a black cap, an indigo robe patterned with pale clouds and loose sage-green trousers. Behind him a curved shelf draped in indigo cloth holds a row of red lacquer cups in a wide arc, like a crescent of good fortune.
In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Nine of Cups shows a well-fed man seated with folded arms before nine cups arranged on a curved, cloth-covered bench. It is often called the wish card. The folded arms show satisfaction; the display of cups shows plenty. The card is honest pleasure in comfort and in what has been earned.
