What the card shows

A craftsman with his hair in a topknot sits at a rough wooden workbench under a thatched eave, bent close over a bronze disc as he cuts a star into it with a chisel. Shavings lie on the bench. On the post beside him hangs a column of finished discs, and another lies at his feet, waiting its turn. White blossom hangs over the scene, and beyond lies a river village with an arched bridge, a small boat and a pagoda under a red sun.

In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Eight of Pentacles shows an apprentice carving pentacles, his finished work displayed on a post, a town in the distance. It is the card of diligent practice. Each disc is made the same way, with the same care. The village is the world the work will go out into; for now, the attention is on the one in his hands.

Eight of Pentacles in love

Love as daily effort: small attentions, repeated. Keep showing up for the unglamorous part.

Eight of Pentacles in work

Training, practice, a job that rewards detail. Put in the hours; the quality shows.

As advice

Choose one skill and practise it for a fixed time today, on something small. Tomorrow, do it again.

Eight of Pentacles: yes or no

Yes

Steady effort is paying off; the card leans yes, as long as the work continues.

A question to keep

What skill would you give an hour a day to, if nobody were watching?
