Three of Wands
expansion · foresight · progress
Three sails leave the bay. Watch them from the headland.
Upright meaning
What you set in motion is under way. The boats have left; now comes the watching and the widening view. Progress, foresight and room to grow.
expansion · foresight · progress · waiting
Reversed meaning
Delays at sea, or plans that stay on the headland. Frustration that the ships are slow. Or a view kept too narrow to see where things are going.
delays · setbacks · short sight · impatience
What the card shows
A man in an indigo robe stands on the edge of a grassy headland, his back to us, a vermilion shawl blowing out behind him. Green bamboo poles stand upright in the ground around him, one under his hand. Below, sailing boats set out across a calm bay toward a red sun sinking over distant islands.
In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Three of Wands shows a figure on a cliff watching ships sail out, three staffs planted beside him. The ships are ventures already sent into the world; the high ground is foresight. Where the Two of Wands chose a direction, the Three sees it take shape. The card asks for patience and preparation, not more pushing: the boats go at the speed of the wind.
Three of Wands in love
A relationship widening its horizons: travel, a longer view, room to grow. Look ahead together.
Three of Wands in work
Expansion, trade, a venture beginning to move. Keep watch, prepare for what returns, and think one season ahead.
As advice
Check on something you have already started, and prepare for its return: the next order, the next reply, the next step after this one.
Three of Wands: yes or no
Yes
What was launched is under way; the card leans yes, given time for the boats to come back.
A question to keep
What have you already launched that deserves your patience now?
