Seven of Cups
choices · illusion · imagination
A castle, a crane, a snake: seven visions in the clouds.
Upright meaning
Many choices, many dreams, not all of them real. Imagination is rich, but the clouds blur what is solid. Look closely before reaching.
choices · illusion · imagination · wishful thinking
Reversed meaning
Clarity returning, a choice finally made. Or so many options that none is chosen. The clouds part when one cup is picked up and the rest set down.
clarity · decision · overwhelm · disillusion
What the card shows
A figure in an indigo robe patterned with wave roundels stands with his back to us, hand raised to his chin. Before him a bank of clouds holds seven red lacquer cups in two rows. From them rise a castle, a loop of pearls, a laurel wreath with a red ribbon, a carp leaping from a wave, a coiled green snake, a veiled figure in white and a crane with spread wings. Below the clouds, mountains and a waterfall.
In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Seven of Cups shows a figure before seven cups in the clouds, each holding a vision: a castle, jewels, a wreath, a dragon, a snake, a veiled figure and a head. It is read as choices, fantasy and illusion. Some visions promise success, some hide danger, and the veiled one is the unknown. The card asks which is real.
Seven of Cups in love
Fantasy, idealisation or too many possibilities. See the person as they are, not as the dream in the cup.
Seven of Cups in work
Many options and not enough focus. Test each idea against the ground before committing to it.
As advice
Write your options down and cross out every one you could not start this month. Choose from what is left.
Seven of Cups: yes or no
Not yet clear
Too many visions and none yet solid; the answer depends on choosing one.
A question to keep
Which of your options is solid, and which is only cloud?
