What the card shows
A young rider sits on a heavy black horse that stands perfectly still on a grassy bank at the edge of a ploughed field. He wears a wide-brimmed hat with a sprig of green leaves in the band and an indigo cloak lined with red. In one open palm he holds a bronze disc marked with a star and looks at it steadily. The furrows run in long straight rows toward a thatched farmhouse, a line of pines and a blue mountain.
In Rider–Waite–Smith tarot the Knight of Pentacles is the only knight whose horse stands still: a heavy work horse at the edge of a ploughed field, the knight holding his pentacle, a sprig of green on his helmet. He is patience and reliability, the one who does the work, finishes it, and does not need to hurry. The ploughed field is both his achievement and his promise.
